My Whole Classroom Needs to Be Sorted

Since we are gearing up for our "math festival" of ideas I had to remind you of this oldie but goodie you can grab for a dollar at our favorite shopping haven- yup, Target! The best part is that they come in a lot of different colors which makes them even better! I also bought colored straws to cut up and have the kids sort to make patterns. These become necklaces and bracelets when you string them on a pipe cleaner and my kids never outgrow their passion for these!

What else can you sort?

I have my kinders sort colored hair elastics...they come in big and little, thick and thin, sparkles and plain...the kinds are endless. These can also be used to make patterns.

At easter time I found the best garland with little plastic easter eggs on it.......I bought it and cut it apart! Same at Halloween I got candy corn garland and Christmas I found the cutest plastic popcorn garland. It's really pretty inexpensive since the garlands are usually quite long and you get lots of individual pieces when you cut it apart.

During our winter unit, we sorted mittens - by mittens or gloves, by color, by fabric, etc.

I make manipulatives from tiny cookie cutters using salt dough dyed with Wilton paste coloring. You can see pictures on my website. The link is http://www.lindaslearninglinks.com/mathlitfall.html

Chenille pompons of different colors and sizes-great sensory item, too! You can also have students pick the chenille pompons up for sorting with the big plastic tweezers to help with fine motor control.

I working towards a lid collection. They come in so many sizes and colors. Should be interesting to see how many ways they can be sorted.

I have these plates and I use them to sort all of my dice. I have lots of different kinds (I wrote a mini grant for them last year) and the compartments of the plate makes it easy for the kids to put the dice back correctly so they stay nice and neat.

My kids sort dried beans- buy a bag of that 15 bean mix. They can be sorted by size, shape, and color.
I'm also going to color some large pasta and have my summer school kids sort that and string it to make patterns on a necklace.

i keep the lids from dried out markers (thick and thin) and use these for sorting. The kids love this and when they find a dried out marker they usually bring me the lid:)
