Counting On... Some Are Catching On!

I actually had a student tell me it was faster to just say ten and then count on with the additional cubes! So now I'm not alone in my understandings and I am starting to feel hopeful. So many of these concepts are developmental and cannot be rushed. I get it but the standards are still staring me in the face so I will stay with it. My students found this activity engaging and I am big on keeping them engaged. We are also working on addition with our counting sticks which have been a big hit in kinderland.

Love it! It is good to hear from another K teacher they feel the pressure of standards staring them in the face. I feel that we are working with the same standards and the same class of kiddos! Inspirational once again! (I also have a few, that are getting it.)

I Love your unifix cards and the snowflakes! I can see that they might help turn on a few lightbulbs! The standards are the same for every child, but we all know that every child is unique. I like that the bar is set high, but we need to sometimes throw a few kids over it! Lol!

OMG you are so right about that Cindy.Maybe once there is a Transitional Kindergarten things will be more developmental and I think the Common Core will be more appropriate.
I'm all for a challenge but...

I'm so glad you posted this because I am FRUSTRATED with this concept...our math series skipped counting by tens and ones in the teens and went straight to counting on to 41. Die. I have post-it noted this section for next year, and will be supplementing some extra ideas.

Kinder Kiddo,
What planet does the publisher of your math program live on? That is crazy and I am not sure I could get my class there. If you want those cards they are in my Winter Warm-Ups and they have helped since we practice every darn day for a few minutes.

I tried the I have_____. Who has______?game you shared at the expo. I tried numbers 1-30 and the next day I did alphabetical order. It was terrific and I did learn some things about my kids. I love that you gave me so many little additions to my program. I'm watching you again tonite to grab some more activities.
thanks again,

Great idea once again. These standards are just, well....you know. Some of my little ones are just that...little and so not ready for any of this. I guess it's all about "exposure" and hoping they will be exposed enough that it will stick when they are ready. On a side note I finished watching the Expo and WOW! What wonderful presentations and I can't say thank you enough for all the time and effort you put in to doing it. I WISH I WAS IN YOUR DISTRICT!!! or had the opportunity to see and learn from you in person...your co-workers are very lucky to have you!!!!

Though I am certain you have way better things to do with your time I have tagged you for the 12 Things meme.... just playin' by the rules lol

Counting on is a ridiculous standard for Kindergarten but I always tell my kids it is a FIRST grade idea and then they are not so hard on themselves and some are even more motivated to learn!

*hugs* Kat

Your blog is AWESOME! Did you ever make available the counting sticks recording sheets? When and how do you use the counting sticks in your classroom? Thanks again for all of the great ideas!!
