I am trying to finish up my report cards this weekend and I thought you might like seeing the assessment packet I created to come up with grades on a section of ELA.This seems fairly painless. As I called kids over to retell the story of the 3 little pigs, the other children worked on these pages and enjoyed doing it because it was well within their skill range. No, we did not have to bubble in answers on a standardized test and I still have not been hit with timing children when decoding. Seriously? Have these test designers met a five year old, ever? I hope with CCSS we gain some common sense about young children and do more valid assessment work. The kids loved doing this because they could draw their thinking first. I like to put the rubric right on the page for the kids to see as I check it off. This gives me an opportunity to remind them of what they need to work on. No fuss...
I don't know about you but I hate the piles of assessment that never tell me anything I don't already know!

It's so good to know I am not alone in thinking that the way we assess children is ridiculous. I love your Three Pigs assessment-I could even see using it in my first grade classroom. Is it for sale?

P.S. In my district kinder has been intructed to start using the Common Core standards instead of the current California standards because by the time our new kinders start taking standardized tests, the CC test will be in place. YIPPEE!!! (Oh, the YIPPEE is for teaching the CC standards, NOT for the standardized test.)

This is awesome. I too, used The Three Little Pigs to teach story elements, sequence and much more. I would like to do this again next year and your assessments are wonderful. We were using the common core this year also. Would it be possible to use your assessments? Is there a way that you could make an assessment more generic so that it could be used with different stories? Thanks for sharing! Your ideas are great!
Love these Fran and would love a copy. I agree that hopefully with CCSS we will move away from Standardized tests with K. This is the first year our state has not required us to do them. It was great and no tears from students who are b asked to read paragraphs on their own and fill in those bubbles.
