Trying to Get Control Over My Cubbies!

I have a hard time controlling cubbies in my room with so many children so here is my new system. Wish me luck! I know kids pay no attention and papers will be flying everywhere but I am going to see how this goes.
The label gets covered up with work so I thought a chart with their name and number (same as on hw folder) would be a good idea. In a perfect world this could teach them how to refer to a list. I might be have a bit of a fantasy right now... huh? Okay, give me credit for trying! Do you do something smarter?

I have a number on the bottom of each cubbie right in front. I also put the child's name with number on each side of the cubby about 4-5 inches from the top. When I had morning and afternoon classes morning names where on one side and afternoon on the other. You have to test the height of the side names to make sure they can be seen while standing. I have three rows. The first is 4 inches down, second 4 1/2 and bottom is 5 inches down. This works well for me. The names are on address labels and mounted on cute cut outs.

Hi Fran! I number my cubbies as well and put the numbers up high on the side as well as on the name label. For the past 2 years I have stopped having students put papers in their cubbies. They put all papers on my share for sharing. Then they go in a basket for parent volunteers (or me) to file. The papers go home neatly to families in our school's Wednesday envelopes. No messy cubbies and no wrinkled papers in the bottom of backpacks. I do love your name cards with photos. Nice touch! This year I am doing a lot of name work with student numbers too. They already know what thier number is! That's a first!

I number lots of things in my room too. Cubbies, practice books, homework folders, name chart, etc. In K, many times, their name is right next to it but as they move with me to first, it no longer needs their name. I haven't really started yet because I have one spot open. And chances are....if I number everyone....a new student will enroll.

It's an almost perfect system.

Hi Fran I use a number system for cubbies and post the list so they can refer to it. I do not put papers in cubbies. I have an am and a pm class.

I would love to hear about your class. I have learned many(?) are ELL and you have 2? teachers. Co-teacher(?) Aid(?) I also know from this picture that you have 29 in PM? What about AM?

How do you do it all??

Karen,
I have a co teacher in the room and we see 31 kids in the morning as well as 31 in the afternoon. My class still has openings. We teach like our hair is on fire!

Fran! That is crazy! {That you have 31 students all together, always!} Also, I think I have mentioned this before, but I'm not quite sure. Since I am SO LUCKY to be living so close to the famous Kindergarten Crayons, I would love to come by and volunteer in your classroom one day! It would be so fun to see you in action! Anyway, the point of my comment...haha...last year I had the student's nametags hanging off the top of the cubbie, that way the papers didn't cover their names.

Hadar - I wish I could come too- (I'd LOVE to be a fly on the wall in your classroom), but I'm in Ohio and I would be leaving my students!

My classroom door is always open to you my friend. I would feel honored to have you!

Fran- I too number my cubbies and everything I give my kids has the same number, their pencil box, scissors, homework folder. I have a large list I hang for reference. It's hard to remember all 32 names/numbers combination. So far the kids are doing well with it. Only a few have put stuff in the wrong cubbies. I wish I was closer, but I'm seven hours away.

I teach Pre-K and I give each child a number at the beginning of the year too. We are 23 days away from kindergarten and I have begun addition to line children up. They really have to pay attention. I will say "1 more than 10" or "2 more than 5" I can challenge my more advance students.

For cubbies, I alternate Girl, Boy, so my girls have odd numbers and my boy have even numbers. Most years I can do this until the last two, and I might have two girls or two boys. This helps the children with keeping their coats and lunch boxes separate, as most boys and girls chose different characters and colors for clothing.

I love this idea. I was thinking of doing something like this for my cubbies in preschool. I LOVE your blog. I have seen so many cool things on your blog! What fun! Thanks for sharing your awesome ideas!!!!!
