Stripping To Make A Pattern Book

So if you are a kindergarten teacher you might be working on patterning skills at this time. Generally students really enjoy the predictability of this and find it lots of fun. We try to introduce this with lots of manipulatives but also using the students themselves. Boy, girl, boy, girl or clap, snap, clap, snap... Using their bodies is always the best starting place.
Try some of these or add on your own ideas:
1. Sit, stand, sit, stand
2. Tied shoes, buckle shoes, tie shoes, buckle shoes
3. Jump, clap, jump, clap
4. Uniform shirt color: red, blue, red, blue
What are your favorites? Eventually we work with unifix cubes, teddy bears and obviously the calendar.
Here is a strip book to use for recording this using shapes. Grab it right here and I hope you enjoy it.  Happy Labor Day!

Hi, Fran! Of course, we read "Goldolocks", :-)! The story in "Where Teddy Bears.." takes a little wolf on a fairytale character journey to answer his question. It really is adorable!

Have I told you lately how much I love everything you do??!! And, do you have 29 students? Please tell me that you have assistance (although I know you could handle it, regardless)!

Sweet Chrissy,
You are the nicest blogger in the world. I have another full time teacher in the room and I will eventually have 31 kids! I just made an expository text called Bear Facts talking about REAL bears.

Fran, thanks for sharing all your wonderful ideas. I was planning math stations and wanted to use your 1 2 3 Count With Me number book. The problem is when I download the PDF I missed the page that contains numbers 8 & 9. I looked through older postings but can't seem to find it. Would you forward it to me via my e-mail (shervey1@yahoo.com)? I would greatly appreciate it!

Thank you for the free download! I love doing patterns and I wish we did it earlier in the year. But since we follow the standards we don't do patterns until December. I will be tucking this away until then! Thanks so much again!

Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate all of your hard work. I have downloaded many of your free items, but have also purchased a few from your TPT store. You really have some awesome ideas. I am homeschooling (Part time with my daughter) a kindergartener and a preschooler and many of your items will come in handy for sure. Thanks again, and know that your very hard work is very much appreciated.

Quick question:

Is your state using the Common Core Standards? We were told to absolutely not teach patterns, measurement, money, or time in Kindergarten. We are to spend the majority of our time teaching numeracy and cardinality. I love the "strip" books!

LOVE LOVE LOVE it!! I am going to start MATH buckets this week!! Wish us LUCK! I know they can do ....I Love that you always find time to share with others!!

Wowza! 31 students!! Its just crazy to me that some feel that is the best placement for young learning students!! A packed college room is one thing...but a young learner is just nutz! Way to make the best of it and continue to challenge your kiddos!!

Hugs!

I was going to ask the same thing as "Lovetwoteach", we are using common core and also have been told not to teach patterns. But it's a great book that you've made.

So let me address the issue of common core standards and patterning. Patterning is a crucial mathematical skill that should be taught throughout the year. Students will be asked to sort and classify information all the time and need practice with this skill. It scares me that teachers will give up best teaching practices based on this. Our kinders need to pay attention to details and learn to see things in a systematic manner. Sorry- just how I feel!

Thanks SO much for another pattern strip book! I have been following you for a while but have just now figured out how to comment! (pathetic, I know!) So here's a HUGE THANK YOU for all the other freebies I've downnloaded over time. You have amazing ideas and your students are so lucky to have such a dedicated role model! Thanks for sharing and creating such meaningful activities for our classrooms.

I agree completely. I helped write the CCS and that was not our intention to not have the skill taught. It should be taught, but not assessed. I hope that makes sense. Our district wants us to NOT teach them at all. I just wanted to see if anyone else was dealing with districts who just see the standards and not the whole picture! :)
