Those Beginning Days of School...

School starts next week and this is a standard activity in my classroom that I open up with. I try not to get a little crazy when I see the results. We have many kids that cannot write their name at all or proudly show it to me in all caps (you know exactly what I am talking about) and I spend lots of time undoing that. Their drawings can give you a ton of information about their developmental stage and often the little girl with cute ponytails and a zigzag part has been to preschool and her person will have clothes, facial details like eye lashes and lots of details. So lets see how they look this year... Save these to show the kids at the end of the year. Some of them are horrified by their poor fine motor and it is cute to watch their faces!

I do the same activity, and repeat it at the end of the year. I keep the 1st one and display them on 12 x`18 paper side by side. Last year I displayed them in the hall. If you ever need validation of the growth of your students, you MUST do this activity!

Karen,
We keep talking about doing that and this year I think we will. It would also be cute in about a month to have them draw you and compare at the end of the year. I love to see the change in their writing too!

I have them draw a self portrait every month and we put them on the bulletin board. Each month we add the new on on top so parents can flip them up to see each month. Then at the end of the year we make a little book out of them. The parents just love to see the growth!

My partner and I did this a few years ago only we asked the kids to do it every month and called it "Asi soy yo" (this is me). We saved all of them and at the end of the year we sent them all home bound and pretty so parents could have a record of their child's growth. I think I'll do it again this year!

Fran-I have searched and tried so many penmanship line fonts and have not found one I am happy with! What font are you using?

I just posted a pic of our self-portrait drawings. :-)
The student who drew the yellow blob cannot write his name. The student who created the most detailed portrait is actually writing in perfect cursive.

Ahhhhh, kindergarten!

We did an entire book, it had monthly assessments:
1. I can write my name (then it progressed to first and last)
2. I can write 0-10 (got up to 100)
3. I can read these color words
4. I can read these star words
5. I can draw a picture of myself.
6. I can write a sentence about myself. etc etc..:)
