Spring is Blooming In My Room...
Have you read the book Tops and Bottoms by Janet Stevens? It is adorable and the best example of inferential thinking at a kindergarten level that I know of. However, I needed to build background knowledge before I read this story so my partner spent a billion dollars on fresh veggies that appear in this story. When the tops are left on carrots or the roots are left on radishes they cost twice as much! Go figure. I am sure these were all organic and I quickly realized that the children did not have labels for many of these. We used butcher paper, chalked it brown (soil) and had students put the veggies above the ground or under the ground. Then I had students put labels next to each one and we drew the roots. It was really an engaging activity for them and I will post a picture tomorrow. We had a carrot and dip party as a follow up.

Sounds like so much fun! Never knew that the roots caused the veggies to cost more! Eek!
Love your "Parts of a Plant" labeling activity!

We planted a garden in raised beds. We received a grant and started the plants as seeds. We had a greening of the grounds on a Saturday (family involvement) when we planted the seedlings in the raised beds. They are growing and the kids (urban city) are amazed at how good they taste. Love your work. Hope to see it on TpT very soon. Pleeeeease.
I love Tops and Bottoms. It's one of my favorite books to read with the kids. I also love Janet Stevens Cook a Doodle Doo! I love your ideas for this book.

I am heading for Amazon to look at Cook a Doodle Doo right now! I bet it is fantastic for a farm unit. Right?
Thanks for all the sweet comments.
The illustrations are fabulous in that book! Hahaha! I laughed when I read your bit about pricing of un-haircutted (I like to make up words ; ) veggies. Ridiculous! The carrot and dip party sounds yummy. Always enjoy reading your great ideas.

Tops and Bottoms is one of my favorites. I love your ideas for using the book. Thanks
I love Tops & Bottoms! Any book that switches orientation and you have to hold the book "all wrong" is a winner with my kids. We do our farm unit in the fall and we made a garden similar to yours...used yarn for celery stings, googly eyes on the potatoes {couldn't help myself!}. Have a look! :)

P.S. The Hey Girl cards you took to your meet-up was hilarious. Let me know if any of you want to meet up on the EAST coast! ;)
Do you have a template for this one. I am looking to do this next week with my Kindergarteners.
Thanks.

Fabulous! I, too, love that book. I will steal your butcher paper idea to go along with the book and our farm unit.

My kiddos loved the plant snack we made!
