This Rubric Cannot Get Lost !

Writing in kindergarten can be a real challenge especially when you work with young students who have limited English. I have tried lots of different strategies and this is one that has been fairly successful. I call it "The 5 Finger Rubric" and right before I release the kids to write we review each "finger" and talk about what good writers do.
Does it work? Not always but the kids love having the rubric on a stick (you can send one home) and it is a great reminder for them of what we are focusing on. I introduce this after we have been in school for a few months and I have modeled good writing through lots of mini lessons. I thought you might like to see this. I think kids need a rubric so they have a clear understanding of what is expected of them.

STINKING presh! I have the "hand" I use too, but it is large (like mine) and students just hold it as they refer to the items on the fingers. I love the idea of downsizing and gluing it on a popsicle stick! :)
So smart - - Thanks Fran.

I like it Fran! I'm sure the kids do too! Will this be a freebie or will you be putting it with other writing things at TpT? (Hint, Hint)
Thanks for sharing it!

Very cute! I've been considering making spacemen for my kindergartners to use for spacing, but if I make these they can serve a dual purpose! Thanks!

This is so cute! I love the idea to send it home for the kids to use but also to remind parents of the expectations.

I put these in a basket on the table they are writing at. It would be a great homework activity for a parent to do with their student!

Love it! Thanks for sharing Fran! I was wondering if you were going to talk a little more about how you start the beginning of your year? Homework folders, Homework in general, parent hand outs and such???

Very cute.
We use heart words and so I am off to figure out how to make a hand and type the words onto the fingers.

I tried to make my own... The hand graphic I had would not let me insert a text box on each finger so the writing was off. I do so much stuff like this and I have never not been able to modify something. Where did you get your hand?

I have no idea in the world. I have had it in a collection for years. I think I got it as free clip art and tossed it in a folder. Sorry I am not very helpful.
