Bring your digital frame to your classroom!

Do you have a digital frame at home that you're not using? If so, you might want to bring it into your classroom and make use of it. You can put text on it and just create jpegs for the kids to read sight words or even phases.
I had one sitting on my computer table near the bathroom filled with pictures from a special event and students use to watch it and wet their pants. I am not even kidding! Okay so I decided to offer up this reminder although I am sure many of you have thought of this just cause you are on it! Think of this as another item you can decorate and use at a station! Do you have any other thoughts?

  1. Thanks for the reminder about this great idea. I wanted to get one to put sight words in. I was looking around during the holidays for sales but I never found one. . .my hunt is back on.

  2. Costco has them for a great price. Just take the one at home and tell the hubs it's just one more thing you need more in your classroom. My husband doesn't even react anymore. He just quietly replaces it. That's why I love Dr. Kindergarten Crayons!
He wants to write a manual on being married to a teacher.

  3. Fran...me again...it's like I can't turn my brain off.
If you have an iPad...you can actually SKIP using the digital frame and for $9.99 you can go to the App store and buy KEYNOTE, which is Apple's version of PowerPoint. With Keynote you can create a similar effect with actual pictures of things in the room....kids faces, sight words and more. Plus you can animate them WAAAyyyy better than you could with a digital frame. Not knocking the frame at all..but trying to encourage using what's available for the iPad. Furthermore, you can create on your computer and transfer them over to the iPad. Kids can make their own "presentations' with a few swipes of the finger. If you have a projector, you can use that to help model how to create.
    Hope this helps!
As for Dr. Kindergarten Crayons...sounds like a GREAT book idea! ;-)

  4. Oooh! Such a great idea! I like the idea of the ipad too, but since that is used for so many things, I think the frame is great because it is kinda useless after you've the seen the photos at home a million times. Mr. Kindergarten Crayons should write that book! I will buy it for my hubby for sure!
They know it is all about the kindergarten classroom!

  9. Fran,
When my kids use the iPad they get to choose from a variety of Apps and practicing sight words might be fun for a few of them. ;-) I love the idea of the frame but I don't own a frame and was thinking what I might use instead. ;-) Kids could even draw something to represent sight words (using an App like Doodle Buddy) then incorporate it into a presentation. For example if you were doing FALL WORDS, different kids could draw leaves, pumpkins, bare trees, etc, then import them into Keynote, add the text and share with their friends. Again, just thinking of ways to make it engaging and fun and at the same time helping them learn to use some of the tools within the iPad. Not knocking the frame,,,,just don't have one to take to school. ;-)

  12. I had an old digital frame I wasn't using, so took it to school and put pictures of all of my kids and their families on there (taken at Back to School Night). It really helped ease their fears about school...they could see their family photos!

  13. I love all the ideas. I did order the book and can't wait till it comes. I am busy working on the new standards and feel better about the technology piece now that I am participating in the book study! I thought I would use my frame to have info about the first weeks of school for the parents to watch while I test their little one. Then I will fill it with patterns, sight words, what number is missing--those quick little review questions that the kids love!

  14. That is hilarious that the kids wet their pants watching the frame! :) Awesome idea! I'd love to have a digital picture frame in the classroom. It would be cool to put one in the science center with a series of pictures showing the progression of a life cycle, say a tree growing from a seed or caterpillar becoming a butterfly.

  15. Lots of great ideas shared here! I use the screensavers on my teacher computer and student computers (4 total) and create different screensavers for each one. One screensaver might be pictures of the kids making letters with their bodies, another numbers, one had pictures of the kids with their names- I used our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Welcome to Our Room PPT to create this one for beginning of the year. I change them out throughout the year.
