Apple Pickin' Not Nose Pickin'
My partner wants to do a mini unit on apples because she loves all the activities around this. She loves making applesauce, graphing different apple tasting favorites, counting with apples, mapping apples, and patterning with them too. So I will be doing apple pickin' activities that reflect our standards. Right now we are working on patterns and I like the idea of apple patterning by size! Now I need Pete with an apple too! Would you like this as a freebie or there is enough out there?
First, I practice these in a pocket chart to be sure the children can"read" the pattern and verbalize it. After a few days of this I will give them this cut and paste with 2 different images to use. I find that too many choices just confuses and overwhelms them. KISS: Keep It Super Simple! Okay... long day but I am giving this to my friends who need one more apple thing tomorrow Grab it and see how the kids do with this one. Leave me your best apple idea if you can take the time and enjoy your apple crunching theme.
Hey there Miss Fran!
ReplyDeleteI was great to see you today. The topic wasn't as inspiring but it was fun non-the-less.
We have been enjoying good old Pete and my students can read the book by themselves!
Take care,
Pat I
Hi Fran! I am doing a week of apples next week too. I haven't done an apple unit in years because the first grade team at my old school always did a huge one. It was off limits to us kinders. I am going to do some sorting, tasting, graphing, counting and read some books and most likely an art project. It will be fun to do apples for once! Thanks for showing us your pattern strip book.
ReplyDeleteI love your stuff and so do the kids! I'd love to see your pattern book, as they need that practice. Thanks!

Fran,
ReplyDeleteLove these type of pattern books. We're not doing apples just yet, but when we do, this will be a GREAT activity! THANKS!
Thanks for sharing. It's perfect. We did our apple unit last week and we're working on patterns this week. We always do the old stand by of trying different apples and picking the color we like best. We started science with it this time and used our magnifying glasses to observe the apple.
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU! We had our Apple Theme last week, but I'm adding this to the file for next year:) We love to estimate how many seeds are in our apples and then dive in them and find out!! Have a great day!!
ReplyDeleteAs always-- awesome! Thanks for sharing!!

ReplyDeleteLast week, we made applesauce! I love this activity: it involves all of the senses, everyone participates, and the result is very gratifying! I'll be posting pics soon.

I used this today and the my little guys absolutely LOVED it! They were VERY engaged. First they cut out their pieces then colored them to make their pattern. They were so on task and QUIET. lol I must say that I loved it too. It allowed me to do some much needed assessment. Thanks again:) Can't wait for the apple unit!
ReplyDeleteI am so happy they liked this. I will post many varieties so brace yourself for pumpkins, leaves, acorns... I know what that assessment job looks like! Seriously, I am so glad this was helpful.

Fun book! I have some ideas from my apple unit here: Mrs. Smith's Apple Unit
ReplyDeleteOne of our favorite activities is our apple cooking at the end of our unit!
Mrs. Smith's First Grade Class
I just love your blog! Thanks for sharing. I'll be teacking K next year (for the first time) and am looking forward to being able to use this apples booklet.
ReplyDeleteTHanks!!! My kids will love this. My best idea -we have Johnny Appleseed day. We wear hats that look like a pot with an apple on the front. I make little bags 6x6 out of gray felt. They are open at the top and I attach a strap that goes over their shoulder. In Johnny's bag we put a baggie of grass seed. We go to the big playground and spread our seeds like Johnny did. Hard to explain, but it is lots of fun.

Thanks, Fran!! As usual your freebies ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat addition to my apple unit! Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite...ummm, the whole unit?! I love doing theme units!
I guess if I had to pick one would be the taste test of 3 types of apples...and then graph it! The kids LOVE this! And then we wrap it up with homemade applesauce that has been simmering ALLLL day!
